The Motheo Story
2017 marked the 20-year anniversary of Motheo. We decided to mark the occasion with a book about the history of Motheo
Motheo turns 21, on 1st July 2018 and no 21st is complete without a celebration of some kind. We decide to celebrate by tapping into the power of storytelling. Our book, The Motheo Story, looks at how the drive, unity and vision of our founding directors started soon after the first democratic election in South Africa and grew, over the course of 20 years, into South Africa’s leading, predominantly black female-owned and managed construction company. The Motheo story is more than just a tale about building a successful business. It is the story of individuals from vastly different backgrounds who found common ground and made that a foundation for greatness. The book looks at Dr Thandi’s life, from humble beginnings in Soweto, to years in exile, a successful doctor’s practice and how that led her into construction. It takes you through Tim Potter’s journey from Australia to South Africa’s construction industry as well as Chris Cudmore’s story from a coal mining town near Vereeniging to a stint in the army, as was mandatory then, to an impressive career in construction. This is a story of how three different lives became entangled in a way that would change many lives, not just those of their employees but the lives of many others they gave a place to finally call home.
