MOTHEO HELPED ME IMPROVE MY SKILLS
The opportunity to improve has been known to bring growth and a sense of fulfilment. The Motheo Academy in Westbury has been that opportunity for one of its students.
The world of construction was not a new one to 28-year-ol McAllister Williams. Having worked on many construction sites over the years, McAllister was not a novice but he was still drawn to the call out that was made to the unemployed youth of Westbury. “I wasn’t working at the time and even though I had done some construction before, I wanted to get more experience. What I wanted even more than the experience was a qualification because that allows me to have something to show future employers,” he says. Because the learnerships the Motheo Academy offers provide the learners with a recognised qualification, McAllister went about the process and made the cut – an achievement in its own right. His previous experience gave him an interesting point of view. He was able to help the others in his group with the knowledge he had acquired in the past. “I really liked that I could help the others here and there; it felt good. It reminded that I like to help and that is something I want to continue doing.” Even with his experience, McAllister says he was exposed to others techniques that he has not worked with before. “I did learn new things and I learnt to do some ‘old’ things even better. One of my highlights was working on re-enforcements. Because I had never done it before, I was very eager to see how it works and to get it right and I did.” McAllister says he sees his future being linked with Motheo. “I have liked the way they do things at Motheo and I am hoping that after this, I can work for them somehow. They have taught me skills like communication. I appreciate that they have taught me how to carry myself and have boosted my confidence by allowing me to figure some things out for myself. Those are qualities I will take with me everywhere I go in my future,” he concludes.
